A new chapter for the Alexandria tramway
ETF, which has been operating in Egypt for over 30 years, is involved in the refurbishment of the Alexandria tramway, the oldest tramway in Africa. A true symbol for the city’s residents, this historic network is set to be completely modernised.
The project demonstrates the expansion of ETF’s activities in Egypt and draws on its expertise in the fields of track and overhead lines. Carried out in collaboration with local and French teams, this project will help to bring about a lasting transformation of the city’s transport network.
A major rail project
The programme involves the construction of 14 kilometres of railway track, including 8 kilometres of entirely new viaducts, as well as all the track and catenary equipment required to operate the future network.
The works also include the installation of around 500 catenary masts, 40 kilometres of contact wire and nearly 50 kilometres of feeder cable, all of which are essential for powering the tramway.
A two-storey depot: a rare feature
One of the project’s most remarkable features is the construction of a two-storey depot. Designed to meet the space constraints at the site, this configuration remains uncommon in the railway sector and is one of the key features of this modernisation project.
The demolition phase is now drawing to a close. Civil engineering works are about to begin and will gradually prepare the site for the next stages of the project, with the start of track and catenary works
A major mobilisation of staff
To successfully carry out this transformation, ETF plans to mobilise up to 200 people during peak periods. The project also involves a significant recruitment drive and the organisation of local teams.
Beyond the technical aspects, this operation represents an opportunity to pass on ETF’s railway expertise and to strengthen its presence in the region in the long term.
